Where can your dog run free, when is the dog beach open and what applies in the Botanical Garden? The rules of the city of Kiel and Schleswig-Holstein at a glance.

Dog-friendly places in Kiel are mainly the 19 off-leash areas the city designates and the dog beach at Falckenstein; everywhere else, parks, green spaces and forests require a leash, and your dog may not enter the Botanical Garden. According to the city, only the area in the Schrevenpark is fenced. Everything here comes from the City of Kiel, the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the NAH.SH fare system.
dog meadow is therefore not automatically an off-leash park: you may unleash your dog only inside the signposted area. The directory of dog-friendly places in Kiel lists more destinations; this guide explains the rules that go with them.
The city states that dogs may run free on a total of 19 off-leash areas. They are signposted inside the green spaces. According to the city, these are the areas, some of them only in part:
| Area | Note from the city |
|---|---|
| Schrevenpark | Fenced area, opposite the Stadtwerke |
| Schützenpark | On Hermann-Weigmann-Straße and near the Schützenwall / Westring crossing |
| Moorteichwiese | West of the RBZ on Königsweg, except Monday to Friday from 8 am to 2 pm |
| Krusenkoppel | Upper slope area, with restrictions during Kieler Woche |
| Volkspark | Near Kaiserstraße, follow the signs |
| Vieburger Gehölz | Section between Krusenrotter Weg and Hornheimer Weg |
| Schwarzlandwiese | Below the Ostring |
| Diederichsenpark | The area without the slope |
| Klünderwiesen | Section southeast of the sports ground on Harald-Lindenau-Weg |
| Olympiawiesen Schilksee | Northern section |
| Projensdorfer Gehölz | Section between Ernst-Barlach-Gymnasium, Am Tannenberg and the railway line |
| Hundestrand Falckenstein | 100 meters north and 250 meters south of the street Scheidekoppel |
The city lists seven more areas: Grünzug Schwarzer Weg, Grünzug Drammenweg, Stadtrat-Hahn-Park, Fritz-Lauritzen-Park, Grünzug Krooger Kamp, Sport- und Begegnungspark Gaarden and the green space at Heidenberger Teich. The exact sections are on the city's page, which also has an overview map.
Free running applies only inside the area. The way there and back is on a leash. The city points out that, apart from the fenced area in the Schrevenpark, other people use these areas for recreation too: pick up poop everywhere, including on the off-leash areas, and be considerate.
The legal basis is the dog act of Schleswig-Holstein (HundeG). The former Gefahrhundegesetz is no longer in force. According to the city, you must keep your dog on a leash:
You may not take your dog into churches, kindergartens, schools, hospitals, theaters or assembly rooms. Dogs are also not allowed on playgrounds, sunbathing lawns or at bathing spots. Outside your home and property, your dog needs a collar or a similar leash attachment with a tag that identifies you as the owner. According to the city's bylaw, the tax tag is required in addition.
Violations of the leash rule, the entry ban and the duty to clean up are administrative offenses and can be fined. The city gives no amounts, so we give none either.
In Schleswig-Holstein, a leash is required in forests all year. The state forest act says so, according to the leaflet of the State Agency for the Environment. Off-leash running in the woods is only possible in fenced dog forests. A leash is always required on dikes, and also in nature reserves.
The state names no fixed date for the breeding and rearing season in this leaflet, so we give no period. In spring and summer especially, a dog running free endangers nests and young animals. The city also asks you to keep your dog close at reed belts and to leave waterfowl alone.
On Kiel's beaches, dogs are banned from 1 April to 31 October, and from 1 April to 30 September at the bathing beaches Falckenstein and Schilksee. The only exception is the designated dog beach on site. Service, guide and assistance dogs on duty are exempt.
The dog beach is at the Falckenstein beach. The city also names another off-leash zone: from 1 October to 31 March, dogs may run free on the beach between Falckenstein (north of the path crossing Deichweg / Falckensteiner Strand) and Schilksee. From 1 April to 30 September, the signs on site apply. Read them there, they take priority over anything you read beforehand. The beaches lie in a landscape protection area, so stay on the paths and leave birds alone.
Swimming with a dog elsewhere is not designated: under the HundeG, dogs are not allowed at bathing spots. If there is a blue-green algae warning, keep your dog out of the water. More in our guide on swimming with your dog in lakes and the sea and the article on blue-green algae in dogs.
No. The visitor rules of the Botanical Garden Kiel say: dogs, except assistance dogs, and other animals may not enter the garden. This applies to the whole garden, not just the greenhouses. Entry is free, but your dog has to stay outside. For a walk with your dog, choose the Schrevenpark or one of the off-leash areas instead.
Schrevenpark. The fenced off-leash area is opposite the Stadtwerke. It is the only area the city explicitly calls fenced. In the rest of the park, a leash is required.
Falckenstein dog beach. According to Kieler Bäder, you can reach the beach without a car by bus 502 (stop An der Schanze) and the beach bus shuttle. The off-leash area is the marked section; outside it, the beach dog ban applies from April to October.
Krusenkoppel. The city names the upper slope area as the off-leash area. There are restrictions during Kieler Woche, so check the city's page beforehand.
Olympiawiesen Schilksee. The city names only the northern section as an off-leash area.
More parks, forests and promenades are listed in the directory under dog parks in Kiel and parks and forests in Kiel. For every destination that is not designated an off-leash area, a leash is required.
Kiel uses the Schleswig-Holstein fare (SH-Tarif). According to the fare conditions of 1 April 2026, a dog does not ride free automatically:
The fare conditions refer to the rules of the transport company that operates the trip. If in doubt, ask KVG before you travel and buy the dog's ticket in advance.
