ACTIVITIES

Rostock with a dog is easiest when you head for the designated dog beaches in Warnemünde, Diedrichshagen, Hohe Düne and Markgrafenheide. From May to September they are the beach sections where dogs are provided for. Outside the season you can use the regular Rostock beaches with your dog. That comes from the city of Rostock itself.

one of this is a promise of off-leash freedom. The city also points to the applicable leash rule. This guide sorts out what to know beforehand so your day on the Baltic stays relaxed. For a list of places, see our directory of dog-friendly places in Rostock.

Dog beaches in Rostock: sections and times

On its beach page the city lists these beach access points as dog beaches:

Dog beaches in Rostock: sections and times4 Einträge
Beach section Access points Note
Warnemünde 7 to 9 only from 9 pm to 9 am
Diedrichshagen 28 to 34 and 39 to 40 no time given on the page
Hohe Düne 10 to 14 no time given on the page
Markgrafenheide 26 to 27 no time given on the page

The numbers are posted at the beach access points. On site, the signs apply. Older travel pages and newspaper articles sometimes name different access points, because the sections have shifted over the years. Rely on the city page and the sign at the access point, not on an old list.

Guide, therapy, companion and service dogs are exempt from the restrictions. Bring proof.

The city provides waste bag dispensers at the access points to the dog beaches. Dog waste still does not belong on paths, the beach or in nature, so carry your own bags too.

Leash, swimming and algae

On its dog page the city only mentions the "applicable leash rule". We could not confirm how long the leash may be or whether off-leash running applies at the dog beach. Keep your dog on a leash until the signs and the situation are clear.

Whether your dog may also go into the water at the dog beach is not stated on the city page. Check the signage at the access point. In summer, blue-green algae can occur in the Baltic. Look for warning notices at the bathing spot and keep your dog out of cloudy, greenish water. More in our guide to blue-green algae and dogs and in the article on swimming with your dog in lakes and the sea.

Leash rules in the city and the state

There is no general leash rule for the whole city. According to the city, it applies only on selected green areas and streets, for example in the city centre, in the Schwanenteichpark and in certain parts of Warnemünde. The Nordkurier reported this in October 2024, based on a statement by the city senator. There is no general ban on off-leash running. Still, expect a leash in the city centre and in Warnemünde.

At state level, the Hundehalterverordnung of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern regulates supervision in § 2: outside your own enclosed property, dogs may not run free without supervision. A leash is required at assemblies, parades, fairs and other public events, in shops and in zoos. It also applies in places where you cannot step aside or react quickly. Stricter municipal rules remain in force. Additional requirements apply to dangerous dogs.

We have not confirmed a statewide bird-nesting and wildlife breeding season with fixed dates for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. On its dog page the city asks you to leash your dog to protect wildlife. In the coastal forest and near nature reserves, the leash is the safe choice.

Off-leash areas: what the city actually designates

Rostock has only a few designated dog areas. In 2024 the city named two: Jürgeshof (11.5 hectares, on the L22) and a dog area in Groß Klein (600 square metres on Blockmacherring, run by the housing company Wiro). The city has no further areas planned. Check the rules on site before you unclip the leash.

That is why our directory has no separate dog-park page for Rostock. For walks, the page on parks and forests in Rostock helps. General search tips are in our guide to finding a dog park near you.

Three day trips with your dog

Rostocker Heide

At about 6,000 hectares, the Rostocker Heide is Germany's largest continuous coastal forest. The city lists trails there for hiking, jogging and cycling with a dog. Keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife. Nature reserves within the Heide can have their own rules, so watch for signs and stay on the paths.

A beach day in Markgrafenheide or Hohe Düne

Plan the day around the designated section: access points 26 and 27 in Markgrafenheide, 10 to 14 at Hohe Düne. It combines well with a walk in the forest. Bring water and a bowl.

By Molli to Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn

The narrow-gauge Molli railway makes a trip just outside Rostock. Dogs need a dog ticket there: 6 euros one way, 11 euros return (fare as of 1 February 2026). Small animals in suitable carriers travel free. Buy the ticket before the ride, because on the train tickets are sold for cash only with a 1 euro surcharge.

Cafés and restaurants

Confirmed as dog-friendly in the Souldog map data in Rostock are, among others, the restaurants Kartoffelkogge and Restaurant Am Strom and the cafés brise - Restaurant & Café, LALA Cafe - Tagesbar and Café A Rebours. This is a selection, not a complete list. You will find all confirmed places in the Souldog app and in the directory of cafés and restaurants in Rostock.

Ask briefly before you go whether the permission also applies indoors and whether there is room for you on the day. More on etiquette in our guide to dog-friendly cafés in Germany.

Dogs on buses and trams: RSAG and VVW

RSAG states these rules on its page about animals:

  • Small dogs up to 30 cm shoulder height travel free. The same goes for guide dogs and dogs of severely disabled people under SGB IX.
  • All other dogs need a bicycle ticket or a day bicycle ticket.
  • On buses and trams, dogs must always be kept on a short leash.
  • Dogs that could endanger other passengers need a muzzle.
  • Animals must not be placed on seats.

The binding terms are the transport conditions of the Verkehrsverbund Warnow (VVW). Check the rule for your ticket type before you ride.
