Otterhound: temperament & character

Otterhounds are good-natured, independent pack hounds with a deep bark and a keen sense of smell that constantly reveals their willful streak. They are considered friendly but not especially eager to please.

How much exercise does a Otterhound need?

As a scenthound, the Otterhound will follow trails for hours and needs plenty of exercise, ideally near water, along with activities for its nose. Short walks alone do not do the breed justice.

Otterhound: grooming & shedding

The rough, dense double coat mats easily and needs weekly brushing; occasional trimming maintains its texture. The breed loves water and should be dried thoroughly afterward.

Is the Otterhound suitable for beginners?

This extremely rare, stubborn, and pack-oriented breed requires experienced owners with patience for lengthy training; recall remains a lifelong challenge.

Otterhound health problems

As a large, deep-chested dog, the Otterhound is prone to bloat, and hip and elbow dysplasia also occur. The small, highly restricted breeding population makes genetic diversity difficult.

The Otterhound sheds moderately and is only conditionally suitable for allergy sufferers. What matters is a contact test of several hours before getting one — not the amount of coat. The trigger, Can f 1, sits in saliva and dander.
