Temperament & character

The Dogo Argentino is considered confident, bold, and affectionate toward its family, but can be dominant toward strangers and other dogs. Consistent leadership and thorough socialization from puppyhood on are important.

Exercise & stimulation

As an original big-game hunting dog, the Dogo Argentino has high exercise and activity needs, requiring plenty of outdoor time and mental stimulation. Under-stimulation can manifest as unwanted behavior.

Grooming

The short, smooth coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. More important than coat care is consistent, expertly guided training.

Suitable for beginners?

Because of its strength, protective and prey drive, and legal restrictions in many regions such as breed-specific legislation, temperament testing, or leash and muzzle requirements, the Dogo Argentino is not suitable for first-time dog owners. It belongs in experienced hands with a background in consistent dog training.

Health & common problems

As with many white dog breeds, congenital partial or complete deafness occurs frequently, as does hip dysplasia. Due to its light, often unpigmented skin, there is an increased risk of sunburn and skin cancer.

Good with: Experienced owners with time for consistent training, not a beginner's dog
