🦮 Large · Japan
A dignified, independent Japanese guard dog with strong territorial behavior that needs experienced, consistent owners and early socialization.

The Akita Inu is calm, dignified, and loyal to its family, but often wary to dominant toward strangers and other dogs. It shows a pronounced protective instinct and an independent nature.
Exercise needs are moderate to high; daily walks combined with mental activity suit the breed well. Off-leash exercise should be well controlled because of its prey drive toward other animals.
The dense double coat sheds heavily seasonally and needs more frequent brushing during that period; weekly care is otherwise sufficient. Bathing is rarely necessary.
Rather unsuitable for beginners, since the breed can be dominant, independent, and prone to conflict with other dogs. Consistent, calm leadership and early, thorough socialization are required.
Breed-typical conditions include gastric torsion due to the deep chest, hip dysplasia, and autoimmune diseases such as uveodermatologic syndrome and autoimmune thyroiditis. Regular veterinary checkups and slow feeding are recommended.
