Temperament & character

Confident, watchful, and independent, with a pronounced protective instinct. Needs clear, calm leadership so its potential isn't misdirected.

Exercise & stimulation

High physical and mental stimulation needs as an original herding and droving breed. Dog sports or protection work suit the breed's work drive well.

Grooming

The short, robust coat is low-maintenance; occasional brushing is enough. The breed's characteristic double dewclaws on the hind legs need regular attention.

Suitable for beginners?

Its dominant, work-driven character makes the breed unsuitable for beginners. Experienced, consistent owners with adequate outlets for exercise are a prerequisite.

Health & common problems

Hip dysplasia and, due to its deep chest, an elevated risk of gastric torsion occur. Overall the breed is considered robust and not very prone to illness.

Good with: Experienced owners, active families with dog experience, protection and herding dog sports
