🦮 Large · Zimbabwe/Southern Africa
A muscular, athletic hunting dog known for the characteristic ridge of reverse-growing hair along its back.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is confident, calm and reserved with strangers, but forms a close bond with its family. It's strong-willed and needs a self-assured, consistent owner.
The breed needs extensive exercise and mental stimulation but is usually calm and reserved indoors. Sufficient exercise helps prevent unwanted guarding or territorial behavior.
The short, dense coat is very low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. With little undercoat, the Ridgeback is sensitive to cold.
Due to its size, strong will and guarding instinct, better suited to experienced owners who ensure consistent socialization and training from puppyhood. Unsuitable for insecure or overly permissive handling.
Breed-typical is dermoid sinus, a congenital skin canal along the spine that often needs surgical removal. There's also an elevated risk of hip and elbow dysplasia, plus gastric torsion (bloat) due to the deep chest.
