ACTIVITIES

Dog-friendly places in Mönchengladbach are mainly the designated dog areas: the list of the city's mags lists 17 sites, including in the Vituspark, the Bellermühlepark and at the Theaterpark. Your dog may run off leash only on the marked area, not in the whole park. Everywhere else, the leash is the rule in Mönchengladbach.

he directory dog parks in Mönchengladbach shows the sites as a list, and the overview of dog-friendly places in Mönchengladbach has more. This guide explains what applies on site, so your outing stays within the city's rules.

Where is off-leash running allowed in Mönchengladbach?

The mags (Mönchengladbacher Abfall-, Grün- und Straßenbetriebe) publish a list of dog off-leash areas. The newer version names these 17 sites, with the city's own descriptions (German street names kept as published):

  1. Gladbacher Straße (behind the Fan-Haus)
  2. Vogtsgarten/Pauenstraße
  3. Neukircher Weg (south of the Schlossparkplatz, west of the A61)
  4. Rostocker Straße (between cemetery and sports ground)
  5. Kochschulstraße (Bellermühlepark, behind the tennis hall)
  6. Dahlener Straße (Sperberstraße/Hocksteiner Heide)
  7. Schützenstraße (meadow behind the small pond)
  8. Hubertusstraße (opposite Elisabeth-Krankenhaus)
  9. Bruchstraße (Eickes Mühle/south of the pond)
  10. Kruchenstraße (Trimpelshütte/next to the car park of the former swimming pool)
  11. Hettweg (Kaldenkirchener Straße/behind the barracks)
  12. Spielkaulenweg (former Borussia car park)
  13. Hansastraße (opposite the church)
  14. Vitusstraße (Vituspark, above Rheydter Straße)
  15. Zillkeshütte (near Loosenweg)
  16. Gingterstraße/Monschauer Straße
  17. Vierhausstraße/Theaterpark

Older versions of the list, for example on the city's service portal, have only 16 entries. The Theaterpark appears only in the newer version. Check the current mags list before you drive out.

The city's note matters: on the designated areas, dogs may run unleashed unless state law says otherwise. The city names leash and muzzle requirements under state law here. Liability for injury and damage stays with you, and you must remove any mess. The areas are marked with signs. Look for those signs, not just the name of a park.

Online directories sometimes list further meadows, for example in Güdderath or Mülfort. They are not on the city's list. Whether off-leash running applies there, only the signage on site can tell you.

Leash rules in Mönchengladbach: streets, parks and playgrounds

The city's Straßen- und Anlagenverordnung (public order ordinance for streets and public grounds) says in § 6: on streets and in public grounds, dogs must be kept on a leash. Exceptions are existing farm tracks (Wirtschaftswege) and specially designated dog areas. The ordinance defines public grounds as all publicly accessible parks and green spaces, gardens, cemeteries and children's playgrounds. In these grounds, animals may also be led only along the paths. You can read the text in the city's local law collection (German).

For your walk, that means:

  • In the park: Leash, and your dog stays on the paths. The lawn next to the path is not an off-leash area.
  • On farm tracks: The ordinance makes an exception to the leash rule here. It covers existing Wirtschaftswege, not every field track. Stay within recall range anyway and leash up near cyclists, joggers and grazing animals.
  • On children's playgrounds: Animals may not be brought in (§ 5 para. 4). That includes leashed dogs.
  • Dog waste: You must remove it immediately. Carry your own bags.

Under the ordinance, violations can be fined up to 1,000 euros. That is the upper limit, not a fixed rate.

State law applies on top. The NRW Dog Act requires every owner to keep and lead dogs so that nobody is endangered. Additional duties apply to large dogs (from 40 cm height at the withers or 20 kg) and to dangerous dogs and listed breeds. According to the city, exemptions from leash and muzzle requirements apply only where no leash rule exists anyway, such as dog areas, and not on city streets and in public grounds. The behavior test is described on the city's service portal (German).

Two outings with a dog area as the goal

Pick the area as a fixed goal and plan the way there on the leash. That way the outing still works if the meadow is full.

Vituspark and Vitusstraße

The city list names the dog area on Vitusstraße in the Vituspark, above Rheydter Straße. Walk through the park on leash and on the paths, and unleash only on the designated area. Before you enter, see how many dogs are there and whether meeting them suits your dog.

Bellermühlepark and Kochschulstraße

The Bellermühlepark also has an area, listed at Kochschulstraße behind the tennis hall. As in the Vituspark: off leash only on the area, and on leash and on the paths in the rest of the park. To find a place to stop afterwards, use the directory of dog-friendly places in Mönchengladbach.

Forest and breeding season in NRW

NRW has no general leash rule in forests. On forest paths your dog may run free as long as it poses no danger, comes when called and stays in sight. If you leave the path, you must leash it. That is how Wald und Holz NRW describes it (German). In nature reserves, people and dogs may not leave the paths, and dogs must always be on a leash.

For the breeding and rearing season, the state forest agency names no statewide legal leash rule, but it recommends leashing dogs on paths too, to protect wildlife. Follow that, even if your dog recalls reliably. Stricter rules for a specific area in Mönchengladbach are on the signs at the entrance.

Swimming with a dog: no designated spot found

We found no designated dog swimming spot in Mönchengladbach. In § 14, the Straßen- und Anlagenverordnung prohibits swimming in publicly accessible fountains, ponds and watercourses. So do not plan on park ponds as a swimming spot, and check the signage when in doubt.

Be careful at the water anyway. In July 2026 the city reported many dead waterbirds at park waters, above all at the Schlossteiche in Wickrath, with suspected avian botulism. A general leash rule applied in the affected areas. Your dog must not take anything from the water and must stay away from dead or sick birds. Check the city's notice (German) for the current status. More on water and algae is in our guide to swimming with a dog at lakes and the sea.

Cafés and restaurants: no names, ask first

We deliberately name no venues for Mönchengladbach. The Souldog map data currently has no cafés or restaurants confirmed as dog-friendly here, and we did not find an explicit dogs-welcome statement on a venue's own page. Directories and review portals are not enough for us.

Here is how to go about it: call or message the venue before you visit. Ask whether dogs are allowed only on the terrace or also inside, and whether there is a table for you. If you know a venue that explicitly welcomes dogs, you can suggest it in the Souldog app. More on eating out with a dog is in our guide to dog-friendly cafés in Germany.

Buses and trains with a dog: NEW mobil and VRR

Mönchengladbach is in the VRR area. With any valid VRR ticket, your dog can travel free, even several dogs, as long as you stay within the ticket's area of validity. The dog must be under the supervision of a suitable person and kept on a short leash. A muzzle is required if other passengers could be at risk. Dogs stay on the floor and do not take seats. This is what the VRR help page (German) says. We found no separate dog rule from NEW mobil; its tickets follow the VRR and NRW conditions.

If you travel beyond the VRR area, check the other network's rule in advance.
