Where your dog is genuinely welcome in Cologne: from dog-friendly cafés and brauhaus beer halls to the Stadtwald and the green belt, and NRW's first official dog beach. With the Cologne rules on leashing, public transport and swimming that most lists leave out.
Cologne and dogs are a Rhineland love story: in few cities does a dog belong so naturally to the brauhaus, the café and the walk along the Rhine. At the same time, Cologne – like all of North Rhine-Westphalia – has a general leash requirement across the city; your dog may only run free in the designated off-leash areas, of which there are, luckily, around 50. This guide walks you through the finest spots by category and the rules you should know.

Cologne's café scene doesn't just tolerate dogs, it celebrates them. Especially in Ehrenfeld, the Südstadt and the Belgian Quarter, dog-friendly address follows dog-friendly address. A lovely example is the vegan vintage café vevi, where dogs always get a bowl of water at the "vevi water station," or the Café Caprista with its lemon-yellow façade on Venloer Straße in Ehrenfeld.
Because opening hours, owners and house rules change, cafés in particular are worth a quick call or a look at the current website – it saves the disappointment of a closed door. Many cafés also post their dog rules right at the entrance, for example on leashing or the maximum number of dogs.
Nowhere does Cologne's dog-friendliness shine as brightly as in the brauhaus and beer garden. The Biergarten am Adenauer Weiher in the middle of the Stadtwald welcomes dogs in both restaurant and beer garden and puts out a water bowl. The Brauhaus in Kalk with its beer garden also welcomes dogs as long as no one is disturbed. If you prefer something more modern, Ahoi on the Motorworld site in Ossendorf is a good bet, and Lindenthal by Schneiders is dog-friendly too, with a water bowl.
Along the Rhine promenade and across the quarters, dog-friendly venues line up one after another. A good rule of thumb: smaller, owner-run venues and the classic brauhaus beer halls are often more relaxed about dogs than large, busy establishments. A spot on the terrace is usually the most comfortable choice for everyone.
Because Cologne has a leash law everywhere, the designated dog exercise areas are the heart of it for anyone who wants to let their dog run. There are around 50 across the city.
The Stadtwald in Lindenthal, at over 200 hectares Cologne's largest park, offers a roughly 9.6-hectare off-leash area where your dog can run without a leash; outside it and at the neighbouring Lindenthal petting zoo, the leash law applies. The inner green belt is the central, quick exercise loop, with a designated dog meadow at the Herkulesberg. The ring-shaped outer green belt connects several districts and has several off-leash areas, among others in Lindenthal and Marienburg. On top of that, there are off-leash areas and meadows along the Rhine.
For swimming, Cologne has a small speciality: the dog beach at the Rather See, NRW's first official fenced dog beach. Across around 18,000 square metres, dogs may go off-leash into the clear lake water, romp on the sandy beach and really swim. Entry is about five euros per dog (owners free), open during the bathing season (roughly May to September). Check the current opening days in advance, as they are limited.
Another nice spot is the dog meadow at the Fühlinger See in Merkenich, a large off-leash area right by the water – dogs are not allowed in the designated bathing areas or at Blackfoot Beach, though. Along the Rhine promenade, for instance at the Rhine meadows by the Niehl harbour, your dog can cool off. Take care on the Rhine: the current is strong and often underestimated – don't let your dog into the main current and avoid the shipping channel. This is the part most city-with-dog lists leave out – yet it matters for avoiding trouble and fines.
Leashing. Under the North Rhine-Westphalia dog law, Cologne has a leash requirement across the entire city: in pedestrian zones, main shopping areas and built-up areas, in public parks, gardens and green spaces, and at events. Your dog may only run off-leash in the designated dog exercise areas. Violations cost a fine from around 55 euros, considerably more as a formal penalty. Additional rules apply to large dogs from 40 centimetres at the shoulder or 20 kilograms.
Public transport (KVB). Pleasantly uncomplicated: on Cologne's local transport, part of the Rhein-Sieg network, dogs travel free of charge. Small dogs in a transport box count as hand luggage anyway. Keep your dog on a leash on trains and buses, and be considerate on crowded carriages.
Heat. A summer classic, equally important everywhere: never leave your dog in a parked car, not even "just briefly." The interior becomes life-threateningly hot within minutes. More on this in the guide to the dog in a hot car.
Between the brauhaus terrace, the Stadtwald and the Rhine promenade, you don't have to search long for a good day out with your dog in Cologne. It's at its best when you know the city-wide leash law, make use of the off-leash areas and check quickly before a café or brauhaus visit.
