Which of the 17 dog meadows fits your walk? Plus leash rules for park and forest, public transport with a dog and places to eat.

You will find dog-friendly places in Halle (Saale) mainly on the 17 dog meadows the city has designated, and on walks along the Saale and in the parks. Keep one distinction in mind: off-leash running is allowed only on a marked dog meadow. Everywhere else in the city's public grounds, your dog stays on a leash. This guide is about Halle on the Saale river in Saxony-Anhalt, not Halle (Westf.).
he directory dog-friendly places in Halle shows the places on a map. This guide sorts out which meadow fits which walk, what applies in the forest and how to get around the city with a dog.
In its brochure, the city lists 17 dog meadows. Four are fenced, one is partly fenced and twelve are open areas. A selection to give you a feel for where they are:
| Dog meadow | Location according to the city | Fence |
|---|---|---|
| Stadtpark | Northern inner city, on Magdeburger Straße | fenced |
| Birkenwiese/Pestalozzipark | Gesundbrunnen, right on Passendorfer Weg | fenced |
| Oebisfelder Weg | western Neustadt, entrance at the turning loop | fenced |
| Ziegelwiese | Saaleaue recreation area, near the fountain | not fenced |
| Südpark | southern tip of the Kirchteich pond | not fenced |
| Heide-Süd | Weinbergwiesen in the Heide-Süd district | not fenced |
Other areas are on Lutherstraße, on Kantstraße, in Silberhöhe and on the street Landrain. The full list with map sections is in the city of Halle brochure (in German). In the directory you will find them under dog parks in Halle.
The city's usage statute forbids letting dogs run without a leash outside the marked dog meadows. On the meadow itself, one rule still applies: your dog must not endanger or bother other people. If you cannot reliably recall or hold your dog, keep it on the leash. Pick up poop on the meadow too; the city asks people to use the dog toilets there. Fenced does not mean every fence is secure. Check the entrances before you unclip the leash.
In Halle's public grounds and green spaces, a leash is required unless you are on a marked dog meadow. This is in section 4 of the usage statute for public grounds, playgrounds and green spaces. A violation counts as an administrative offense. The city states explicitly that leash and muzzle rules carry fines.
For forest and open countryside, the state forest act also applies. Under section 28, you may not let dogs run unsupervised there. From 1 March to 15 July, dogs must be on a leash, including on adjoining public roads. Hunting, herding, guide, police and other working dogs on duty are exempt. Municipalities can allow exceptions to the leash rule for parts of their area. We did not find which exceptions exist in Halle, so watch for signs.
The state dog act adds duties. Under section 2, every dog must carry a microchip transponder no later than six months after birth. Liability insurance is required no later than three months after the dog's birth. Dangerous dogs and certain breeds face further rules; ask the local public order office.
Peißnitz island is the park island in the Saale. The city's list shows no dog meadow there. Plan the island as a leashed walk. The nearest designated area for off-leash time is the Ziegelwiese in the Saaleaue. You also walk there on the leash.
The Ziegelwiese belongs to the recreation area in the Saaleaue. The dog meadow lies near the fountain and is not fenced. That means your dog should reliably listen to you before you unclip. The part outside the marked area is a leash zone.
The Dölauer Heide is a large forest on the edge of the city. The state forest act applies: dogs do not run unsupervised, and between 1 March and 15 July they stay on the leash. We did not find a separate off-leash rule from the city for the Heide, so do not treat it like a dog meadow. The meadows Heide-Nord and Heide-Süd are separate designated areas.
The Südpark has two designated meadows, Südpark and Südpark II. One lies at the southern tip of the Kirchteich pond, the other in the middle of the park on the Kirchteichpromenade. That suits you if you want a park walk and off-leash time in one place. The path between the areas stays a leash zone.
For the Saale and the lakes, we found no spot where the city explicitly allows swimming with dogs. Swimming with a dog is not designated, so check the signs on site. In summer, blue-green algae can be a problem. Our guide to blue-green algae and dogs explains what helps. For the general topic, see swimming with your dog in lakes and the sea.
In Halle, HAVAG runs within the fare system of the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV). The MDV states that small animals and small dogs ride free if they are in a suitable container such as a box or bag. Dogs without a container need an extra ticket. They must be on a short leash and wear a muzzle. Guide and assistance dogs are exempt from the muzzle rule if they are marked as such and accompany a person.
Ask the MDV in advance which extra ticket and price level fit your route. The federal carriage rules (section 12 BefBedV) also say animals do not belong on seats.
