ACTIVITIES

The easiest way to spend a day in Würzburg with a dog is one of the nine city off-leash areas, the Hofgarten of the Residenz (on a short leash), and then a beer garden or café. The key rule up front: according to the city, all dogs, including small ones, must be leashed in municipal green spaces. You only let your dog run free in the signposted off-leash areas.

his guide sorts out where off-leash is allowed, what applies at the Hofgarten and the Residenz, and how to use buses and trams with a dog. The directory of dog-friendly places in Würzburg adds more spots to browse.

Dog park in Würzburg: the city's off-leash areas

The city of Würzburg lists nine dog off-leash areas on its website. A selection:

Dog park in Würzburg: the city's off-leash areas5 Einträge
Off-leash area Location according to the city
Zellerau, Mainwiesen From the end of the fire brigade harbor to about 200 m past the Schifferkinderheim, towards Zell
Frauenland, Adamibad Between the Adamibad car park, Trautenauer Straße and Zeppelinstraße
Frauenland, Lehnleite Between Elferweg and the Gattinger Straße railway embankment, below the animal shelter
Grombühl, Hans-Brandmann-Anlage Level with the Oberdürrbacher Straße car park
Versbach, Pleichach Versbacher Straße south of house number 102, alongside the Pleichach

More areas are in Keesburg (Gutental), at the Heuchelhof, in Rottenbauer and at Lindleinsmühle. The city is also testing trial areas in Heidingsfeld, Lengfeld and Rottenbauer. A map is available in the city's Geostadtplan.

Off-leash applies only inside the designated area, not in the whole park or along the whole riverbank. The city asks you to let your dog run unleashed only if it obeys your commands. Be considerate of pedestrians, cyclists and inline skaters, and pick up waste there too. Check the signs before unclipping the leash; the city does not say whether an area is fenced.

Leash rules in Würzburg: what applies

Bavaria has no statewide leash law. Municipalities set their own rules. In Würzburg the rule is in the city's Safety Ordinance (version of 12 March 2026, § 9):

  • Large dogs and fighting dogs: a dog counts as large from 50 cm shoulder height. It must be on a leash at all times in all public grounds and on public paths, streets and squares. Exceptions are large dogs outside the built-up area and in the off-leash areas. The exception does not apply to fighting dogs.
  • Leash: it must be tear-proof and no longer than 3 meters.
  • Municipal green spaces: according to the city, all dogs must be leashed, large or small.
  • Waste: you must remove it everywhere in the city, including in the off-leash areas.
  • Forest: the city points out that dogs should generally not run unleashed in the forest because they can startle wildlife.

Breaking the dog-keeping rules can result in a fine. The ordinance does not state an amount. The leash requirement does not apply to assistance dogs and certain working service dogs on duty.

I could not find an official breeding and rearing season leash rule for Würzburg or for Bavaria. Leash your dog in fields and forest in spring anyway. For a comparison with other cities, see the city comparison of dog rules.

With a dog at the Hofgarten and the Residenz

The Hofgarten of the Residenz is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bavarian Palace Administration requires: dogs must be kept on a short leash throughout the garden. Letting dogs run free and bringing other animals is not permitted under the park regulations. There is also a path-only rule: you do not step on flower beds or lawns. Entering the grounds after dark is prohibited. You must remove waste.

Dogs may not be taken into the Residenz itself. The Residenz says it cannot supervise animals brought along. Plan the visit so that one person stays in the garden with the dog, or take turns.

I found no official dog rule for the Marienberg Fortress. Ask the Schloss- und Gartenverwaltung Würzburg (phone +49 931 35517-0) before you plan the climb.

Swimming and the Main riverbank

I did not find a designated dog swimming spot on the Main. The Main carries ship traffic, and the Mainwiesen are best for walking and running. Check the signs on site. For advice on currents and blue-green algae, see our guide to swimming with a dog at lakes and the sea.

Beer gardens, restaurants and cafés with dogs in Würzburg

Confirmed dog-friendly in the Souldog map data in Würzburg are, among others, these five places:

  • Biergarten am Zollhaus (beer garden)
  • Jahnterrasse Würzburg (beer garden and restaurant)
  • Brauerei-Gasthof Alter Kranen (restaurant)
  • Café Wunschlos glücklich (café)
  • MainCake Würzburg (café)

This is a selection, not a complete list. You will find all confirmed places in the Souldog app and in the directory of cafés and restaurants in Würzburg. Ask before you go whether the dog is also welcome indoors. Many places allow dogs only outside, and house rules change.

A call ahead helps: ask for a quiet spot at the edge and for the area where your dog may lie down. More in our guide to dog-friendly cafés in Germany.

With a dog on buses and trams: WVV and NVM

Buses and trams in Würzburg belong to the fare area of Nahverkehr Mainfranken (NVM). According to the fare conditions from 1 August 2026, small animals and dogs are carried free of charge. The WVV adds: keep dogs on a leash and follow local dog-keeping rules.

The transport conditions also say:

  • Dogs travel only under the supervision of a suitable person and on a leash.
  • Dogs that may endanger fellow passengers need a muzzle.
  • Dogs may not be placed on seats.
  • If your dog soils the vehicle, a cleaning fee is charged.

For a ride where carrying a dog costs a fare under another transport association's tariff, you need a regular ticket. That can be the case, for example, on trips across the association boundary. When in doubt, ask NVM or WVV.
