🦮 Large · Germany
A powerful, self-assured guarding and working dog with a pronounced protective instinct that needs early, consistent socialization from puppyhood and experienced, calm leadership.

The Rottweiler is calm, self-assured, and loyal to its family, naturally reserved to wary of strangers. Its protective instinct is strong and must be channeled through socialization.
Exercise needs are high; it needs long walks as well as activities that challenge its strength and focus, such as draft-dog sports or obedience training. Under-stimulation encourages unwanted guarding behavior.
The short coat is low-maintenance; regular brushing during shedding season is enough. Because of its deep chest, it should rest before and after eating to help prevent bloat.
Size, strength, and protective instinct call for experienced, consistent leadership from the outset. It is not suitable for first-time owners without experience handling large, confident breeds.
Breed-typical conditions include hip and elbow dysplasia, osteosarcoma, and subaortic stenosis, a congenital heart defect. Joint X-rays and a cardiac exam in young dogs are recommended.
