🦮 Large · United Kingdom (Scotland)
A cheerful, independent herding dog with a dense, shaggy coat, needing plenty of exercise, engagement, and regular grooming.

The Bearded Collie is cheerful, playful, and more independent than other herding breeds, with a noticeable tendency to bark. He is friendly toward people and generally sociable with other dogs. His herding instinct shows less in active driving than in constant alertness.
As a herding breed with a working background, he needs daily, varied exercise and mental stimulation. Dog sports such as agility or obedience suit his eager, energetic nature well.
The long, shaggy double coat needs thorough brushing down to the skin several times a week to prevent matting. Overall grooming effort is high and time-consuming.
The high grooming and engagement demands make the Bearded Collie more challenging than his playful nature suggests. Owners should plan time both for regular coat care and for exercise.
Reported conditions in the breed include hip dysplasia, autoimmune disorders such as adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease), and hypothyroidism. Regular veterinary checkups are recommended.
