🦮 Large · Germany
A highly specialized German scenthound for tracking wounded game, with exceptional nose work and a calm, deeply focused working temperament suited exclusively to experienced hunters.
The Hanoverian Scenthound is calm, deliberate and extremely focused at work, but tends to be reserved to aloof with strangers. It bonds very closely with its handler.
As a purely working breed for blood-tracking, it needs regular, demanding scent work and plenty of exercise outdoors — without hunting work it becomes understimulated.
The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. The heavy drop ears must be checked regularly for infection.
Suited almost exclusively to experienced hunters with a blood-tracking license and genuine tracking practice, not designed as a purely family dog.
The breed is genetically robust; hip dysplasia and ear infections occur occasionally. Due to the narrow breeding base, great emphasis is placed on health in selection.
