Giant Schnauzer: temperament & character

The Giant Schnauzer is watchful, eager to learn, and deeply loyal to its family, but reserved to wary toward strangers. It has a dominant nature and needs confident, consistent leadership.

How much exercise does a Giant Schnauzer need?

Its need for exercise and stimulation is very high; daily activity of several hours through sport, work, or dog sports such as protection sport or agility is necessary. Plain walks are not enough for this breed.

Giant Schnauzer: grooming & shedding

The harsh, wiry coat needs regular hand-stripping and sheds very little, which can be an advantage for allergy sufferers. The beard and eyebrows need extra grooming and inspection.

Is the Giant Schnauzer suitable for beginners?

Not really suited to beginners, since the breed requires enormous physical and mental stimulation as well as consistent training from experienced owners. Insufficient stimulation often leads to destructiveness and behavioural problems.

Giant Schnauzer health problems

Breed-typical conditions include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and gastric torsion; autoimmune disorders such as hypothyroidism occur occasionally. Regular orthopaedic checks and adapted feeding management are recommended.

The Giant Schnauzer sheds little and is therefore considered comparatively well tolerated by allergy sufferers. No breed is truly hypoallergenic, though: the allergy is triggered by the protein Can f 1 in saliva and dander, not by the hair itself.
