Temperament & character

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is wary of strangers, extremely fond of running with great stamina, and shows strongly pronounced, wolf-typical social behavior within its pack. Compliance must be earned through trust rather than dominance.

Exercise & stimulation

The breed needs several hours of intensive daily exercise, such as jogging, bikejoring, or sled-dog sports, since plain walks fall far short of tiring it out. It is also highly demanding mentally due to its constant vigilance.

Grooming

The dense wolf-like coat needs regular brushing, especially during the pronounced twice-yearly coat blow. Otherwise, coat care is straightforward.

Suitable for beginners?

Suited exclusively to very experienced owners with an understanding of pack dynamics, time for extreme exercise, and a stable, confident presence; absolutely unsuitable for beginners.

Health & common problems

Thanks to its close kinship with the wolf, the breed is considered genetically robust with few breed-typical hereditary conditions; hip dysplasia occurs occasionally. Its life expectancy is among the highest of large breeds.

Good with: very experienced, extremely active owners with pack-leadership skills, not a beginner's dog
