Temperament & character

The Chow Chow is reserved, independent, and not very affectionate toward strangers, yet bonds closely with its owner. It carries itself calmly and with dignity, but defends its territory with a pronounced guarding instinct.

Exercise & stimulation

Exercise needs are moderate; daily walks at a relaxed pace are enough, while strenuous sport is not advisable given its dense coat and joints. It tolerates heat poorly due to its thick undercoat.

Grooming

The dense double coat requires brushing several times a week, daily during shedding season. The deep-set eyes and facial skin folds should be checked regularly.

Suitable for beginners?

Not particularly suited to beginners, since its independent, aloof nature requires consistent, experienced training. Lack of early socialization can lead to pronounced wariness of strangers.

Health & common problems

Breed-typical conditions include entropion (inward-rolling eyelids), hip dysplasia, and cruciate ligament problems; its short, stiff-legged gait also predisposes it to movement abnormalities. Eyes and joints should be checked regularly by a vet.

Good with: Experienced owners, calm single-person households
