🐕 Medium · Austria (Styria)
A hardy Austrian scenthound bred specifically for tracking and hunting wild boar in demanding terrain.

The Styrian Coarse-haired Hound is courageous, tireless, and rather reserved to wary of strangers. It is strongly bonded to its handler but shows a highly independent work drive when hunting.
Its hunting instinct, especially toward wild boar, is very strong and makes the breed unsuitable for life as a purely family pet. It needs intensive daily activity, ideally hunting-related work, and plenty of exercise in open terrain.
The coarse, dense coat is weatherproof and easy to care for, needing only occasional brushing. As a rugged working breed it tolerates wind and weather well but needs room to roam away from residential areas.
This is a specialized hunting breed and can hardly be recommended for beginners without a hunting background.
The breed is considered very robust with few breed-specific hereditary disorders, thanks in part to its close ties to its original working lines. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally.
