🐕 Medium · Ireland
The Irish Terrier is a fiery red, wire-coated terrier with a pronounced prey drive, courage, and great attachment to its family.

Irish Terriers are regarded as bold, spirited, and loyal to their people, but can quickly become fiery toward unfamiliar dogs. They have a strong prey drive and are easily tempted to chase small animals. Despite their fire, they are very affectionate and seek their family's closeness.
The breed needs generous daily exercise and mental occupation, otherwise it becomes restless or destructive. Long walks, scenting games, and dog sports suit its energy level well. Because of its prey drive, off-leash time should only take place in a secure environment or with a reliable recall.
The wiry coat needs regular hand-stripping two to three times a year to maintain texture and color. Weekly brushing suffices between stripping appointments. The ears should be checked regularly.
Given its pronounced prey drive, stubbornness, and tendency toward dog rivalry, the Irish Terrier suits experienced owners with consistent, loving training better than first-timers. Early socialization is essential to reduce aggression toward other dogs.
The breed is considered robust, but hyperkeratosis of the paw pads and cataracts occur occasionally. Regular veterinary checkups and a good breeder with health testing help identify risks early.
