🐕 Medium · Congo (Central Africa)
An independent, cat-like clean primitive-type dog from Central Africa that is practically barkless but brings a strong-willed nature and pronounced hunting drive that call for experience.

The Basenji is intelligent, independent, and reserved with strangers. It doesn't bark but makes yodeling and howling sounds, and grooms itself like a cat.
Exercise needs are high, combined with a strong hunting drive that makes off-leash time without security risky. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise.
The short coat is low-maintenance and nearly odorless. Regular eye checks are recommended because of inherited eye diseases.
Its independence makes classic obedience training difficult; motivating with food or play works better than compulsion. It is not suited to owners expecting a docile companion.
Breed-typical conditions include Fanconi syndrome (an inherited kidney disease), progressive retinal atrophy, and hypothyroidism. A genetic test for Fanconi syndrome before breeding is recommended.
