🐕 Medium · Japan
An independent, cat-like fastidious spitz from Japan with a strong will that calls for calm, clear leadership rather than force.

The Shiba Inu is confident, wary of strangers and notably independent in its decision-making. It bonds strongly with its people but doesn't submit readily.
The Shiba needs plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation, as understimulation can lead to destructive behavior or escape attempts. Its hunting drive usually calls for keeping it on lead in unfamiliar terrain.
The double spitz coat sheds heavily, especially during the twice-yearly coat blow, and should be brushed daily at those times. Otherwise the Shiba largely grooms itself through cat-like self-cleaning behavior.
Not recommended for beginners because of its strong-willed nature, hunting drive and low tolerance for training mistakes. Experience with dominant, independent breeds is an advantage.
Breed-typical conditions include patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and the autoimmune condition chylothorax, along with an elevated risk of skin allergies. Regular orthopedic checkups are recommended.
