The Standard Poodle is a highly intelligent, athletic poodle with a curly, allergy-friendly coat that needs plenty of physical and mental activity along with regular professional grooming.

The Standard Poodle is considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds, sensitive, eager to learn, and strongly attached to his handler. He is usually friendly with strangers and other animals but can become insecure if underoccupied. His playful nature often persists into old age.
This breed needs extensive daily physical and mental activity, such as retrieving, swimming, or dog sports like agility and obedience. Standard Poodles were originally bred as water retrievers and most enjoy swimming. Apartment living alone, without enough activity, does not suit the breed.
The curly coat grows continuously and must be professionally clipped every four to six weeks, plus brushed several times a week to prevent matting. It is considered relatively good for allergy sufferers, since little hair is shed into the environment. Ears should be checked regularly given their drop shape.
The Standard Poodle suits beginners well, as he is highly eager to learn and cooperative, provided he gets enough activity. The regular, often costly grooming should be budgeted for in advance. Active owners who enjoy training get on well with this breed.
Breed-typical conditions include gastric torsion (bloat) due to the deep chest, hip dysplasia, and sebaceous adenitis (an inflammatory skin condition affecting the sebaceous glands). Addison's disease also occurs more frequently. Feeding smaller portions several times a day and regular skin checks are recommended.
