Shih Tzu: temperament & character

The Shih Tzu is friendly, affectionate and not especially active, but has a confident, sometimes stubborn streak. It tends to be friendly rather than wary toward strangers.

How much exercise does a Shih Tzu need?

Short, gentle walks suit the Shih Tzu fine; strenuous activity in heat should be avoided because of its short muzzle. It still appreciates mental engagement through small training exercises.

Shih Tzu: grooming & shedding

The long, silky coat needs daily brushing and regular bathing; many owners keep it clipped short instead. The facial skin folds and eyes should be checked regularly, as they're prone to irritation.

Is the Shih Tzu suitable for beginners?

Generally beginner-friendly as a calm small companion, provided the brachycephalic anatomy is taken seriously. Heat sensitivity and daily coat care are a fixed part of life with this breed.

Shih Tzu health problems

As a brachycephalic breed, the Shih Tzu is predisposed to brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS); corneal injuries, patellar luxation and disc problems (IVDD) also occur more frequently. Veterinary monitoring of the airway and eyes is recommended.

The Shih Tzu sheds little and is therefore considered comparatively well tolerated by allergy sufferers. No breed is truly hypoallergenic, though: the allergy is triggered by the protein Can f 1 in saliva and dander, not by the hair itself.

Good with: Apartment living, seniors, quiet households
