🐾 Small · United Kingdom (England/Scotland border region)
A sturdy small working terrier from the English-Scottish border region, originally used for fox hunting, which gave it stamina, courage, and a pronounced prey drive.

Border Terriers are regarded as friendly, affectionate, and not very aggressive toward people, yet show the typical terrier courage and stubbornness. Their prey drive can break through around small animals and unfamiliar dogs.
As an original fox-hunting companion, the Border Terrier needs generous daily exercise and opportunities to dig and sniff. Pure apartment living without exercise does not suit it.
The wiry double coat is low-maintenance but should be hand-stripped rather than clipped two to three times a year to preserve its texture. Ears and nails should be checked regularly.
Suited to active first-time owners who are consistent about recall and plan for the prey drive; a purely sedentary lifestyle does not fit the breed's temperament.
The breed is considered robust; hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and the hereditary seizure disorder CECS (Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome) occur occasionally. Responsible breeding choices significantly lower the risk.
