Temperament & character

The Shar-Pei is calm, independent, and devoted to its family, but often reserved to wary toward strangers. It shows a strong protective instinct and needs early, consistent socialization.

Exercise & stimulation

Exercise needs are moderate; daily walks at a moderate pace are usually sufficient. Because of its short muzzle and wrinkled skin, exertion in hot weather should be avoided.

Grooming

The characteristic skin folds must be cleaned regularly and kept dry to prevent inflammation, especially around the head and tail. The rough, short coat, by contrast, needs little care.

Suitable for beginners?

Rather unsuitable for beginners, since the breed is prone to a hereditary fever syndrome and needs consistent, experienced handling. Skin-fold care also requires regular veterinary attention.

Health & common problems

Breed-typical is Familial Shar-Pei Fever (FSF) with recurring fever episodes and amyloidosis risk, along with skin fold dermatitis and entropion (an inward-rolled eyelid). Regular veterinary checks of skin and eyes are recommended.
