🦮 Large · Balkans (North Macedonia / Serbia)
A robust Balkan livestock guardian dog that independently defends flocks against wolves and bears without direction, with a pronounced protective and territorial instinct toward strangers.

Sarplaninacs are independent, watchful and deeply loyal to their family, yet naturally wary and protective toward strangers and unfamiliar dogs. Their pronounced protective drive requires early, thorough socialization.
As a livestock guardian, the breed traditionally works independently and needs no athletic outlet, but does require plenty of space and daily exercise to patrol its territory. Purely apartment living is unsuitable.
The dense, long double coat needs regular brushing, especially during shedding, to prevent matting. The breed is weatherproof and hardly suited to purely indoor living.
Because of its pronounced protective and territorial instinct, it suits only very experienced owners with space and strong leadership, never beginners or city apartments.
The breed is considered robust, with hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia occurring occasionally. As an original landrace, genetic diversity is comparatively high.
