An athletic American scenthound with a glossy red coat, tireless stamina, a keen nose and the loud trailing voice typical of raccoon hunting.

The Redbone Coonhound is friendly, affectionate and people-oriented, but in the field a tough, tireless hunter with a loud treeing bark. At home it is usually calm and adaptable.
As a hunting dog it needs long, extended exercise and the chance to follow its keen nose, for example through trailing work or long hikes. Without enough exercise it tends toward loud barking and wandering off.
The short, smooth coat is very low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. The drop ears should be checked regularly to prevent infections.
Its loud hunting voice and pronounced tracking drive call for experienced owners with a securely fenced property and experience handling scenthounds.
The breed is considered robust; hip dysplasia and ear infections occur occasionally. Adequate exercise and weight control should be maintained to protect the joints.
