Temperament & character

The Irish Water Spaniel is intelligent, playful and loves water above all else, often appearing reserved with strangers. Within the family it is regarded as loyal and sometimes clownish.

Exercise & stimulation

Its exercise needs are high; swimming and retrieving games suit its water-hunting heritage perfectly. Mental stimulation through training is just as important as physical exercise.

Grooming

The dense, curly coat needs regular brushing and occasional trimming to prevent matting. The ears should be thoroughly dried after swimming.

Suitable for beginners?

The breed is intelligent and eager to learn, but its reserve toward strangers and the coat's grooming demands call for some dog experience.

Health & common problems

Common issues include hip dysplasia, eye disorders and ear infections caused by the drop, densely furred ears. The breed is generally considered robust.

Good with: Active families near water, hunters
