🦮 Large · United States
An American scenthound with a distinctive blue-mottled coat, originally used for hunting raccoons at night.

The Bluetick Coonhound is friendly, affectionate and generally easygoing with family and children, but can be stubborn once it has picked up a trail. Its loud, melodious bay while tracking is characteristic of the breed.
With its keen sense of smell, it eagerly follows trails and can become oblivious to everything around it, so off-leash time is advisable only in secured areas. It needs plenty of daily exercise to work off its energy and hunting drive.
The short coat is low-maintenance, but the drop ears should be checked regularly for moisture and infection. Because of its vocal nature, it suits houses with a yard better than noise-sensitive apartments.
Its strong tracking instinct and tendency to bay loudly call for consistent recall training and experience with scenthounds.
Like many large drop-eared breeds, it is prone to ear infections and occasionally hip dysplasia. Its deep chest also carries some risk of bloat.
