🦮 Large · United States
The Plott Hound is an American hunting dog with an outstanding nose, exceptional stamina and great courage, originally bred for hunting bear.
The Plott Hound was originally bred to hunt bear and wild boar and is correspondingly courageous, tough and independent. It is loyal and affectionate toward its family, but in the field shows tremendous drive and endurance.
The breed needs a great deal of exercise and ideally a job such as trailing or hunting companionship, to put its nose and stamina to use for hours at a time. Without enough outlet, the Plott Hound becomes restless and vocal.
The short, smooth coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. The drop ears should be checked regularly for moisture and infection.
The strong hunting instinct, loud trailing voice and enormous exercise needs make the breed unsuitable for apartment living and inexperienced owners.
Overall the Plott Hound is considered a robust working breed, though hip dysplasia and, due to its deep chest, bloat can occur.
