🦮 Large · Spain (Burgos)
A Spanish pointing dog with a sturdy build, brown-and-white coat, and a calm, loyal temperament once it settles down away from fieldwork.
The Perdiguero de Burgos is calm, loyal, and strongly family-oriented, showing reserve rather than aggression toward strangers. In the field it is focused and tireless, at home usually calm. It forms a close bond with its owner.
The breed needs generous daily exercise as well as occupation that engages its keen nose. Retrieving and field training suit its original abilities. Short walks alone are not enough for a grown Perdiguero.
The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. The drop ears should be checked regularly. Otherwise, grooming needs are low for a hunting breed.
Outside Spain the breed is rare, so experienced breeders and contacts are hard to find. As a hunting dog it needs a meaningful job and consistent, benevolent leadership. For active families with hunting-dog experience it is a loyal companion.
The breed is considered robust; hip dysplasia occurs occasionally. As with many large, deep-chested dogs, attention should be paid to bloat, for instance through rest after eating. Comprehensive health data is limited because of its low prevalence outside Spain.
