A confident, dignified companion dog with a markedly short muzzle and long coat that, due to its airway and eye anatomy, needs special care in heat and exertion.
The Pekingese is confident, independent and somewhat stubborn, yet very affectionate toward its owner. It often meets strangers with reserve bordering on suspicion.
Exercise needs are low; short walks in cool weather suffice, while prolonged exertion or heat should be avoided because of restricted breathing. Stairs and jumps also strain its long back.
The long coat requires daily brushing to prevent matting. The folds around the nose and the prominent eyes need regular cleaning and monitoring.
Suitable for beginners only with reservations, since the breed is prone to respiratory and eye problems and needs regular, sometimes demanding grooming plus veterinary monitoring. Heat management is a year-round concern.
As a brachycephalic breed, the Pekingese is frequently affected by brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS); the prominent eyes are prone to corneal injuries and proptosis. Chondrodystrophy of the spine also raises the risk of disc herniation (IVDD).
