🐾 Small · Japan
An elegant Japanese companion dog with a silky coat, cat-like grace and a calm, affectionate temperament perfectly suited to apartment living without a garden.

The Japanese Chin is calm, affectionate and strongly people-oriented, regarded among companion breeds as especially cat-like in its independent, elegant manner. It is friendly toward people and usually gets along well with other pets. Toward strangers it tends to be reserved rather than fearful.
Short, calm walks and play sessions indoors are entirely sufficient for the Japanese Chin. It is not an athletic breed but an easygoing companion content with little exercise. Exertion in hot weather should be avoided because of its slightly shortened muzzle.
The long, silky coat needs regular brushing to prevent matting but, lacking an undercoat, is overall easier to maintain than in many other long-haired breeds. The large eyes should be checked daily for irritation. The slightly shortened muzzle makes it sensitive to heat and exertion.
The Japanese Chin is considered a gentle, adaptable companion and is well suited to first-time owners and seniors. Rough physical exertion and extreme temperatures should be avoided. Otherwise it is an easygoing, calm housemate.
The slightly shortened muzzle can cause brachycephalic issues such as labored breathing in heat, though milder than in more extreme breeds. Eye problems and patellar luxation occur occasionally. A breeder who health-tests the parent animals is recommended.
