🦮 Large · Italy
A large Italian livestock guardian dog with a dense white coat, an independent nature, and a deeply rooted protective instinct toward its flock or family, which it defends resolutely.

The Maremma Sheepdog is independent, calm and territorial, with a pronounced protective instinct toward its family and territory. It is naturally wary and watchful toward strangers.
As a livestock guardian, it prefers to patrol its territory independently rather than run long distances, but it does need daily exercise and clear boundaries. Nighttime barking to secure its territory is part of its natural behaviour.
The dense, weatherproof coat needs regular brushing, especially during the spring and autumn shedding seasons. Otherwise, as an outdoor working breed, it is low-maintenance and robust.
Its pronounced independence and protective drive require experienced, consistent owners with a securely fenced property, making the breed unsuitable for beginners.
The breed is considered robust, though hip dysplasia and other joint problems occur occasionally given its large frame. Controlled growth during puppyhood helps prevent orthopedic damage.
