🦮 Large · Sweden
A large Scandinavian elkhound that independently and tirelessly holds moose at bay with loud, persistent barking.

The Jämthund is confident, even-tempered and considered somewhat calmer and more people-oriented than other Nordic hunting breeds. At home it is generally relaxed, but in the field it works very independently and with great stamina.
The hunting drive to move is very strong, so it needs long, thorough daily exercise to stay balanced. Without appropriate outlets, its hunting instinct can turn into roaming or excessive barking.
The dense, weatherproof double coat needs regular brushing, considerably more during shedding season. The breed is well adapted to cold temperatures and is less comfortable in heat.
Its high exercise needs and strong hunting drive call for active owners with experience handling Nordic hunting breeds.
The breed is generally considered robust, though hip dysplasia occurs occasionally. Close breeding in Scandinavia means attention is paid to genetic diversity and health.
