🦮 Large · Spain (Ibiza, Balearic Islands)
A slender, sighthound-like hunting dog from the Balearic Islands with large prick ears, a pronounced prey drive, keen hearing, and an enormous, hard-to-curb urge to run when off-leash.

The Ibizan Hound is independent, sensitive, and closely bonded to its owner, often reserved toward strangers. Its natural hunting instinct is strongly developed, so it quickly perceives small animals as prey. Despite its alertness, it is usually calm and affectionate at home.
The breed needs generous, ideally long daily exercise and loves to run and jump, including over obstacles. Off-leash time is advisable only in secured areas or with a very reliable recall, given its prey drive. Without enough occupation it tends to roam and attempt to escape.
The short, smooth or slightly rough coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. Because of its low body fat and thin coat, the Ibizan Hound chills quickly in winter and then needs a coat. Ribs and a slender build are typical of the breed, not a sign of being underweight.
Given its strong prey drive, sensitivity, and high exercise needs, the Ibizan Hound suits experienced owners better than first-timers. Consistent but loving training and plenty of patience with recall work are important. In unsuitable hands it can quickly become overwhelmed or run off.
The breed is considered robust and relatively free of breed-specific hereditary diseases. Eye problems or allergies occur occasionally. As with many sighthound types, gentle anesthesia dosing should be observed.
