Temperament & character

The Magyar Agár is gentle, loyal, and closely bonded to its owners, though reserved and watchful toward strangers. Indoors it is usually calm and undemanding, despite a pronounced sight-hunting instinct outdoors.

Exercise & stimulation

As a sighthunter it needs daily opportunity for free, fast running in enclosed areas, complemented by calm walks and rest periods. Short, intense sprints matter more to it than hours of trotting.

Grooming

The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. Because of its low body fat it chills quickly and needs a coat in winter.

Suitable for beginners?

Its pronounced prey drive and enormous top speed require consistent recall training and secure off-leash areas, so the breed is better suited to experienced dog owners.

Health & common problems

The breed is generally robust and has few genetic burdens; bloat and eye disease occur occasionally. As with all sighthounds, special care is needed with anesthesia and medication dosing.

Good with: active owners living alone with secure areas to run
