🐕 Medium · Sweden
A Swedish pack hound with a tricolor coat, an exceptionally keen nose, and a calm, balanced temperament once it settles down away from the hunt.

The Hamiltonstövare is calm, balanced, and affectionate indoors, but quickly develops its pronounced passion for trailing outdoors. As a classic pack hound it enjoys working alongside other dogs and is friendly toward people. Once on a scent, it can become very independent and hard to distract.
The breed needs long daily walks as well as opportunities for nose work, such as tracking or mantrailing training. Without an outlet for its keen nose, it quickly becomes bored. Off-leash exercise should be carefully considered given its tendency to follow a trail.
The short, dense coat is uncomplicated and needs only occasional brushing. The pendant ears should be checked regularly for wax buildup and moisture. Otherwise, coat care is minimal.
Its pronounced hunting and trailing instinct calls for consistent recall and safe off-leash training, so prior experience with scenthounds is helpful. As a family dog it is friendly and patient as long as its exercise needs are met. The breed is still rare in Germany, which can make finding a breeder more difficult.
The breed is generally considered robust, with hip dysplasia occurring occasionally. Ear infections are possible because of the pendant ears. Regular checks at breeders who screen for hip dysplasia are advisable.
