🦮 Large · Germany
A versatile hunting dog with very high exercise and work needs, easily underchallenged without a hunting or sporting outlet.

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a versatile hunting dog with a strong work drive, quick comprehension, and a strong desire to bond with his person. He is confident and tireless without being aggressive. Without a task, he quickly becomes restless and finds his own activities.
Exercise needs are very high; the breed needs daily, extensive, and demanding activity, ideally through hunting work or dog sports. Plain walks fall far short of what's needed.
The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. Grooming effort is low, but the need for engagement is high.
Because of the very high exercise and work requirements, the German Shorthaired Pointer generally doesn't suit first-time owners or less active households. Most go to hunters or dedicated dog-sport enthusiasts.
The deep chest predisposes the breed to gastric torsion, a life-threatening emergency. Von Willebrand disease, an inherited blood-clotting disorder, is also known in the breed, along with hip dysplasia.
