🦮 Large · Germany
A versatile German pointing dog with a long, weatherproof coat, equally at home in field, forest, and water work, and prized as a classic hunting companion.

The German Longhaired Pointer is even-tempered, eager to work, and closely bonded to its handler, usually showing a calm, composed manner around strangers. Its pronounced pointing and retrieving instinct shapes everyday life.
As a classic hunting companion, the breed needs several hours of varied daily activity, including water work and retrieving, otherwise it becomes restless and hard to manage.
The long, slightly wavy coat needs regular brushing, especially on the ears, tail, and legs, to prevent matting. After water work, the coat should be allowed to dry thoroughly.
Suitable only for hunters or very experienced dog-sport enthusiasts with genuine opportunities for exercise; without a job, the dog frequently develops behavioral problems.
As with many medium-to-large hunting breeds, hip and elbow dysplasia can occur. The clubs' active breeding-trial practice has a stabilizing effect on health.
