🦮 Large · Croatia
An enduring, energetic running dog with a distinctive spotted coat that needs plenty of exercise and experienced, consistent leadership.

The Dalmatian is alert, active, and closely bonded to its family; historically it accompanied horse-drawn carriages. It shows high stamina and needs continuous activity to avoid becoming restless or destructive.
Exercise needs are very high; daily extensive running or cycling alongside a bike matches its original purpose. Plain walks are not enough for most Dalmatians.
The short coat sheds heavily despite its length and should be brushed regularly. Otherwise, grooming needs are low.
Rather unsuitable for beginners, since the high exercise needs and sometimes stubborn character demand consistent, experienced leadership. Without adequate activity the breed tends toward behavioral problems.
Breed-typical is hereditary congenital deafness (unilateral or bilateral), which should be checked with a BAER test, along with a predisposition to urinary stones (urate stones) due to a breed-specific purine metabolism. A low-purine diet and adequate fluid intake are recommended.
