🐕🦺 X-Large · United Kingdom (England)
A powerful, calm guard and protection dog with a strong protective instinct, requiring clear leadership and close veterinary care due to health risks.

The Bullmastiff is calm, confident, and very affectionate with his family, while reserved to watchful toward strangers. His pronounced protective instinct calls for early, consistent socialization.
Exercise needs are moderate; long but not overly strenuous walks are sufficient, and excessive joint strain during growth should be avoided. Exertion in heat is poorly tolerated because of the massive build.
The short coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. Facial skin folds should be checked regularly and kept dry, as should the ears.
Not particularly suited for beginners, since the size, protective drive, and health risks call for experienced, physically confident owners. Consistent training from puppyhood is essential.
Mastiff-type breeds like the Bullmastiff are prone to hip dysplasia, gastric torsion, and cancers; life expectancy is comparatively low. Regular checkups and feeding management to help prevent gastric torsion are recommended.
