🐕🦺 X-Large · Turkey
A powerful Turkish livestock guardian dog with a strong territorial and protective instinct that needs experienced, consistent handling.

The Kangal is independent, calm in daily life and fundamentally wary to defensive toward strangers. Bred over centuries to guard flocks independently, it makes decisions without constant direction.
Exercise needs are moderate; the Kangal moves through its home territory more in a patrolling manner than athletically. Sufficient space and clearly defined territory matter more than long, guided runs.
The short to medium-length, dense coat is low-maintenance and holds up well even in harsh climates; occasional brushing suffices. Given its enormous weight, joints should be protected during growth.
Not suitable for beginners because of its pronounced protective and territorial instinct, sheer size, and legal restrictions in some regions. Early, extensive socialization and experienced handling are essential.
The breed is considered robust compared with other giant breeds, though hip dysplasia and ectropion are described as breed-typical. The deep chest also carries a risk of gastric torsion.
