🐕🦺 X-Large · Switzerland
A calm Swiss mountain dog with strong family attachment, prone to several serious conditions because of its giant size and shortened lifespan.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is considered good-natured, calm, and very good with children, showing little aggression toward people. It bonds closely with its family and has a low prey drive.
Exercise needs are moderate; long walks and light cart-pulling work are well received. Given its size, jumping and stair use should be limited during growth.
The long, dense coat requires brushing several times a week, daily during coat change. Given its size, early habituation to grooming, nail trimming, and vet visits is important.
Suited to beginners with some caveats: the temperament is very amiable, but the size and health risks of the breed require experience with large dogs and financial reserves. The comparatively short life expectancy should be understood before acquiring one.
The breed shows an above-average predisposition to cancer, including histiocytic sarcoma, as well as hip and elbow dysplasia and bloat (gastric torsion) due to the deep chest. Regular preventive checkups and slow growth during puppyhood are strongly recommended.
