🐕 Medium · France (Pyrenean type)
A French pointing dog with a short brown coat, a balanced temperament at home, and a gentle yet keen work drive for pointing on field and water.

The Braque Français is gentle, affectionate, and strongly people-oriented, considered especially sensitive among pointing breeds. It tolerates harsh training methods poorly and responds best to praise and consistency. Indoors it is usually calm, while outdoors at work it is highly focused.
As a pointing dog, the Braque Français needs extensive daily exercise as well as activities that engage its nose. Retrieving, tracking, or field training suit its aptitudes well. Without appropriate outlets, it becomes discontented and hard to manage.
The short, fine coat is easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing. The drop ears should be checked regularly for moisture and dirt, especially after work in water or undergrowth. Otherwise, grooming demands are low.
Because of its sensitivity and exercise needs, the Braque Français is best suited to owners with hunting-dog experience or plenty of time for fieldwork and training. Harsh handling quickly leads to insecurity. In Germany the breed is still uncommon outside hunting circles.
The breed is considered robust and not very prone to breed-specific hereditary disorders. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally. As with many drop-eared breeds, regular ear checks are advisable.
