🐕 Medium · USA
The Boykin Spaniel is a compact American water and flushing dog with a curly, usually brown coat, bred for duck hunting.

Boykin Spaniels are friendly, playful and closely bonded to their family, while being energetic and eager to work. As a flushing and water dog they love retrieving and swimming above all. Toward strangers they are usually easygoing and open.
The breed needs extensive daily exercise, ideally with water contact and retrieving games, the purpose it was originally bred for. Without enough activity, Boykin Spaniels quickly become restless or overly clingy. Dog sports like dummy training suit their nature very well.
The curly coat needs brushing several times a week and regular trimming to prevent matting. The drop ears should be checked and cleaned frequently because of their tendency to trap moisture. The coat should be thoroughly dried after swimming.
The pronounced urge to move and love of water call for active owners with access to water or plenty of time for exercise. The breed is less suited to calm apartment living without outdoor access.
The breed is generally robust, though hip dysplasia, eye disorders and Factor VII blood clotting disorder occur occasionally in the breeding population, for which reputable breeders test. Ear infections are not uncommon due to the drop ears and love of water.
