🦮 Large · Belgium
A powerful, rough-coated cattle and guard dog with a calm, self-assured temperament, needing consistent training and regular physical and mental exercise to stay balanced.

The Bouvier des Flandres is calm, watchful, and deeply devoted to its family, while reserved to wary toward strangers. It has a strong protective instinct and needs clear leadership.
This breed needs plenty of exercise plus tasks such as protection work, carting, or obedience to remain balanced. Plain walks alone are usually not enough to satisfy it.
The rough double coat needs regular brushing and trimming several times a year to prevent matting. The beard and eyebrows collect dirt and need frequent cleaning.
The Bouvier des Flandres is not particularly suited to first-time owners, since it requires consistent training, early socialisation, and experience with guarding and protective drive. With appropriate preparation, it is manageable.
Reported conditions include hip and elbow dysplasia as well as glaucoma. Due to its deep chest, there is also a risk of gastric torsion, making several small meals advisable.
