Temperament & character

The Border Collie is considered the most intelligent dog breed of all. It is extremely quick to learn, sensitive, and driven to work, with a pronounced herding instinct known as the eye. These very traits make it demanding: it wants and needs a job, or it suffers.

Exercise & stimulation

Its need for physical and especially mental stimulation is very high. Ideal outlets include herding work, dog sports such as agility, obedience, and treibball, and constantly new mental challenges. Endless ball-throwing alone is unsuitable, as it makes the dog frantic and obsessive.

Grooming

The medium-length double coat is low-maintenance and needs regular brushing, more often during seasonal shedding. Grooming demands are minimal; the real effort goes into mental engagement rather than coat care.

Suitable for beginners?

Not really suited to beginners. The Border Collie easily overwhelms inexperienced owners: insufficient stimulation leads to nervousness, compulsive behaviour, and an urge to control movement such as cars, joggers, or children. It belongs with active owners who understand dog behaviour.

Health & common problems

Breed-typical conditions include hip dysplasia and inherited eye diseases (collie eye anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy), along with the MDR1 gene defect that causes drug sensitivity, making an MDR1 test essential. Epilepsy and the storage disease ceroid lipofuscinosis (CL) also occur.

Good with: Experienced, highly active owners and dog sport enthusiasts
