Temperament & character

The Brittany is friendly, lively, and eager to work, while being strongly people-oriented. It shows little aggression but a strong innate hunting drive.

Exercise & stimulation

Without daily extensive exercise and ideally hunting or sporting activity such as dummy training, the breed quickly becomes unbalanced. A securely fenced area or a reliable recall is important given its hunting drive.

Grooming

The medium-length, slightly wavy coat needs regular brushing, particularly the feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. After outings in the field, ears and paws should be checked for foreign objects.

Suitable for beginners?

Only conditionally suited to beginners, since its pronounced hunting and exercise drive demands consistent training and plenty of time outdoors. Without hunting or sporting outlets, frustration builds quickly.

Health & common problems

Hip dysplasia and epilepsy are typically described in the breed, along with occasional spinal muscular atrophy. Hip X-rays and a neurological workup are recommended before breeding.

Good with: Active hunters and sportspeople with access to open space
