Temperament & character

Bernedoodles are considered calm, friendly, and family-oriented, combining the even temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the Poodle's cleverness. Most are open toward children, strangers, and other dogs, showing little aggression. As a relatively young cross, developed in North America in the early 2000s, the range of temperament and appearance varies widely depending on the parent dogs and generation.

Exercise & stimulation

Exercise needs are moderate; daily walks and play are enough for most Bernedoodles, and extreme endurance activity isn't necessary given descent from the rather leisurely Bernese Mountain Dog. Activity should be reduced in heat because of the dense coat.

Grooming

The dense, usually wavy to curly coat needs brushing several times a week and regular clipping to prevent matting. Since Bernedoodles are bred in mini, medium, and standard sizes, space requirements and grooming effort vary considerably depending on the chosen variant.

Suitable for beginners?

Bernedoodles are suitable for first-time owners with some caveats — their friendly nature makes training easier, but size, coat-care effort, and possible health issues inherited from the Bernese Mountain Dog should be realistically factored in. Standard-sized dogs also need adequate space.

Health & common problems

From the Bernese Mountain Dog side, hip dysplasia, certain cancers, and a shortened lifespan can be inherited; from the Poodle side, patellar luxation and eye disorders. Hybrid vigor may statistically lower cancer rates compared with purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs, but it's no guarantee, and reputable breeders screen both parent dogs thoroughly.
